From a pageantry-draped wedding in historic Westminster Abbey, to a horse-drawn carriage ride through the streets of London, to a kisses on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, Prince William and Kate Middleton marked a fairy-tale beginning Friday to what one watcher called their "happily ever after."
Standing next to the Queen, Prince Philip, Charles and Harry, the newest royal couple smiled and waved to the cheering crowd that gathered outside the palace.
Earlier, standing in front of the nearly 800-year-old abbey, Prince William slipped a ring onto the finger of Kate Middleton — with the briefest moment of awkwardness — to make it official.
"I pronounce that they be man and wife together, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost," Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams told those assembled.

The couple smiled and held hands gently during the ceremony, but remained solemn throughout the 16th royal wedding service to take place in the church.
At one point, before the vows began, William mouthed what appeared to be: "You look beautiful," to his bride, who was dressed in a tiara and veiled ivory gown, her dark hair down.
The gown, designed by Sarah Burton and made by an Alexander McQueen team, had a nearly three-metre-long train. Kate's "halo" tiara was made in 1936 and was purchased by King George VI for Queen Elizabeth. It was presented to the Queen, who was Princess Elizabeth at the time, by her mother on her 18th birthday.
For his part, the prince wore the red tunic of the Irish Guards regiment, with a blue sash.
In his address to the couple during the ceremony, Rev. Richard Chartres said the world is celebrating the couple's wedding.
